it是先行主语，替代以whether引导的主语从句。

6 struggle against… odds, 与恶运搏斗。
7 If they had only had one more child, the fact would have passed unnoticed. 如果他们只是添了1个孩子，这件事本来就不会引起任何人注意。这是虚拟语气，用来表示与过去的事实相反的假设。unnoticed是过去分词作方式状语，修饰passed。
