The student in China cannot speak or write proper English, for the simple reason that they think in Chinese. If you want to improve your English, you have to get this part out of the way to start with as soon as possible.
When you speak English, only the “English channel” is supposed to be on, with the rest turned off completely. Only by doing so, can you speak or write proper English.
For instance, “what’s your name?” if I ask you in English. If you think in Chinese, you will have to translate that sentence into Chinese first, and then you will come up with an answer in Chinese, and finally you will turn that answer into English. It follows the pattern: “English – Chinese – Chinese – English”. As you can see that there are two unnecessary steps in between, which will waste about ten seconds. How can you carry on a conversation smoothly and naturally if there is always a 10-second pause after each question? The correct pattern you should follow is “English – English”, with nothing in between.
Thinking in Chinese when you speak or write English will give rise to Chinglish (Chinese English) sentences, as it does in the case of an email from a friend of mine, part of which goes as follows:
“My friends in hotel they are so busy , because the Christmas is comming so the business is very well. They are so tired, and they are don't have enough time send message to me. My roommate she work in western food , in the Christmas they have a party.”
The correct version should be as follows if you think in English:
“The business is very good at the hotel, for Christmas is around the corner, so my friends working there are busy. They are so tired that they do not have time to send messages to me. My roommate works at the western food department, where a party will be hosted at Christmas.”
Thus, please always think in English whenever and wherever you can!!!
