Xi, Lew Acknowledge Differences but Say Cooperation Could Bring Mutual Benefits
In a symbolic but significant meeting for both leaders, new China President Xi Jinping and U.S. Treasury Department Secretary Jacob Lew on Tuesday acknowledged they wouldn't be able to settle all diplomatic differences, but said each country should continue to seek progress where possible.
中国新任国家主席习近平周二与美国财政部长雅各布•卢(Jacob Lew)在一次象征性但具有重要意义的会晤中承认，中美两国很难解决所有外交分歧，但双方都应继续尽可能地寻求进展。
The remarks came as a number of issues have bubbled up in recent weeks that are further complicating the relationship between the U.S. and China. The meeting was the first for Mr. Xi in his new role, which he assumed on Thursday, as well as Mr. Lew's first meeting with a foreign leader as Treasury Secretary.
最近几周出现的一些问题导致中美关系更加复杂。这次会晤是习近平上周四当选中国国家主席以来首次会见外国官员，也是卢担任美国财政部长之后首次会见外国领导人。
Mr. Xi, in his direct remarks, told Mr. Lew that the countries would 'unavoidably' continue to have differences but said they could be minimized if Washington officials approached the relationship in a 'strategic and long-term' way.
习近平发表了坦率的讲话。他对卢表示，中美两国将不可避免地继续存在分歧，但如果美方能从战略和长远角度处理中美关系，就可以缩小分歧。
Mr. Lew offered a polite but frank response, congratulating Mr. Xi on his new position while at the same time prodding China on familiar issues, such as reducing trade barriers to U.S. investment.
卢对此作出了礼貌而坦率的回应。他祝贺习近平当选中国国家主席，同时也就一些常见问题向中方提出了自己的看法，比如减少针对美国投资的贸易壁垒。
A U.S. official said after the meeting that Mr. Lew raised issues about the exchange rate, cyber security and North Korea. They also discussed the global economy and the economic situation in Cyprus, the official said.
一位美国官员在会晤后说，卢提到了汇率、网络安全和朝鲜问题，他们还讨论了全球经济以及塞浦路斯的经济状况。
The China relationship is a particularly touchy one, as the countries have a number of differences─including on Iran sanctions and currency valuation─that fall into Mr. Lew's jurisdiction.

'In the China-U.S. relationship, we have enormous shared interests. And of course unavoidably we have some differences,' Mr. Xi said, sitting beside Mr. Lew in front of a giant portrait of snow-capped mountains. He added, 'I believe that we will always be able to set the direction of this relationship moving forward to the benefit of the people of both countries.'
习近平说，在中美关系中，我们有极大的共同利益。当然也不可避免地存在分歧。他坐在卢的旁边，后面是一幅白雪覆盖的山峰的巨幅画卷。他还说，我相信我们一定能让两国关系朝著有利于两国人民的方向前进。
The 45-minute gathering, held at Beijing's Great Hall of the People, kicked off two days of meetings between Mr. Lew and Chinese officials. The meeting serves as a test for Mr. Lew, well-known in Washington for his domestic budget expertise but less so for his foreign-policy chops.
