UN chief welcomes Madagascar president'sdecision to quit running for presidency
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday welcomedMadagascar President Andry Rajoelina's decision not to run inthe upcoming presidential elections.
"The secretary-general welcomes the decision by Mr. AndryRajoelina, president of the Transition in Madagascar, not to runin the forthcoming presidential elections planned for May 2013," said a statement issued here byBan's spokesperson.
"President Rajoelina's decision, as well as the earlier pledge by former President MarcRavalomanana, should help facilitate the conduct of free and credible elections to bring an end tothe transition," said the statement.
In the statement, the UN chief stressed the importance of upholding the electoral calendar adoptedby the country's National Independent Electoral Commission of the Transition (CENIT).
"It is also critical that the 2011 roadmap to end the crisis, particularly provisions related toconfidence-building measures, is fully implemented," said the statement.
In addition, Ban reiterated that the United Nations stands ready to continue supporting thegovernment and the Malagasy people.
The presidential elections of Madagascar will be held on May 8, 2013, with the legislative electionsscheduled for July 3.
President Rajoelina said on Tuesday night that he won't be a candidate for the upcomingpresidential elections.
Rajoelina said in a televised address that he will help prepare the elections and be ready to transferpower to the winner of the elections.
He also said he prefers to make concessions rather than bring the country to the brink of collapse.

联合国秘书长潘基文１６日晚通过其发言人发表声明，对马达加斯加过渡总统拉乔利纳宣布放弃总统竞选表示欢迎。
声明说，潘基文欢迎马达加斯加过渡总统拉乔利纳不参加定于今年５月举行的总统选举的决定，拉乔利纳的决定和前总统拉瓦卢马纳纳此前放弃参选的承诺有助于马达加斯加举行自由、可信的选举，早日结束过渡时期。
声明说，遵守马达加斯加国家独立选举委员会制定的选举日程十分重要，而贯彻落实２０１１年制定的解决马达加斯加危机路线图也是至关重要的，特别是要落实路线图中关于建立信任举措的条款。潘基文在声明中还表示，联合国愿意继续为马达加斯加政府和人民提供支持。
马达加斯加过渡总统拉乔利纳１５日晚发表全国电视讲话，正式宣布放弃参加总统竞选。政治分析人士认为，拉乔利纳的此番表态是国际社会积极斡旋和国内反对派压力下的结果，他放弃参加选举，有助于早日解决马政治危机。
马达加斯加政治危机爆发于２００８年１２月，时任首都塔那那利佛市长的拉乔利纳以拉瓦卢马纳纳总统擅自关闭其私营电台和电视台为由，举行反政府集会，引发部分军人倒戈。拉瓦卢马纳纳２００９年３月宣布辞职，之后流亡国外，而拉乔利纳在军人支持下就任马达加斯加过渡总统。
去年１２月初，南部非洲发展共同体（南共体）特别首脑会议决议重申，为解决马政治危机，南共体希望拉乔利纳和拉瓦卢马纳纳都放弃参加总统竞选。拉瓦卢马纳纳已于去年１２月中旬宣布放弃参加总统竞选。此后，拉乔利纳的相关表态成为国际社会和马国内各政治派别关注的焦点。 |
