Apple Chief Returnsto Flush But Vexing Market
Apple Inc.'s Tim Cook is visiting China publicly for the secondtime since becoming chief executive officer in 2011.

Mr. Cook met with Miao Wei, head of the Ministry of Industryand Information Technology, to exchange views on the development of China's information andcommunications industry, global mobile communications, the development of smart devices andtrends in innovation, the ministry said Tuesday on its website. It didn't provide any furtherdetails.

While the purpose behind Mr. Cook isn't clear, he should find no shortage of things to talk about. Mr. Cook's visit comes amid greater scrutiny of Apple's manufacturing practices in China and asChina becomes Apple's No. 2 market for sales. Apple opened three additional retail stores inmainland China last year, bringing its total number of stores in China to eight.

Apple's China sales were $5.7 billion for the fiscal quarter through September, roughly 16% of the company's global total. The company recently said sales of the iPhone 5 inChina topped two million units over the weekend of its launch on Dec. 14.
