Dead panda cub had liver abnormality: U.S. zoo
U.S. National Zoo said Monday a panda cub that died severaldays after its birth there had liver abnormality.
After performing a necropsy, experts found the dead cub'sheart and lungs looked good, which suggests that it did notsuffocate, the zoo said in a statement. The only abnormalitiesthe veterinarians have detected so far were some fluid in itsabdomen and a slightly abnormal liver.
The panda cub, born at the zoo on Sept. 16, was found dead on Sept. 23. The zoo said themother, Mei Xiang, was doing fine on Monday.
The zoo said the cub appeared to be a female, and weighed a little less than 100 grams.
The zoo also said there were no signs of trauma, external or internal on the body of the cub, which means that it was not crushed. There was a little milk in the cub's gastrointestinal tract.
The zoo said it will continue to search for the cause of the cub's death, and is working closely withexperts in China.
Mei Xiang gave birth to her first cub, Tai Shan, in 2005. Tai Shan now lives in China. The zoo nowhouses Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, a pair of giant pandas on loan from China.

根据声明，专家发现夭折熊猫幼崽心肺正常，说明它不是因窒息死亡，幼崽身上也无外伤，说明不是被母亲“美香”压死，其消化道内还存留有奶水，说明它得到母亲喂养。幼崽尸体唯一不正常的地方是肝脏轻微异常和腹部积水。专家们认为，现阶段暂无法确定其死因。
动物园说，这只幼崽应是雌性，死亡时体重接近100克。眼下，“美香”情况正常，睡眠、饮食都在恢复。
“美香”于本月16日深夜产下幼崽。幼崽24日夭折。“美香”和另一只中国大熊猫“添添”2000年从中国四川来到华盛顿国家动物园。“美香”于2005年首次产崽，产下的大熊猫“泰山”眼下生活在中国。 |
