Japan Releases Senkaku Showdown Video
The latest bubbling of tensions between China and Japan over the disputed islands shows no signs of simmering down.
On Monday, in what may have been the strangest protest action yet, Japan's ambassador to China had to sit and watch as an unidentified man ripped the flag off of his car in Beijing.
Then, on Tuesday, the Japanese Coast Guard released footage from an Aug. 15 confrontation with a Chinese boat in which they tried and failed to prevent the first successful landing on the Senkaku islands by activists from Hong Kong since 1996.
Administered by Tokyo but claimed by Beijing and Taipei, the Senkakus are referred to as the Diaoyu Islands in mainland China and Tiaoyutai in Taiwan.
A seven-minute highlight real of the Japanese footage compiled by the Japan Times shows Japanese Coast Guard boats issuing warnings to, and eventually firing water cannons at, the Hong Kong boat as it approaches the islands. It then cuts to shots of people aboard the Hong Kong boat - the Bao Diao II, or the 'Defend the Diaoyu II' - pulling unidentified objects out of a bucket and hurling them at one of the Japanese boats.
From there, the video goes on to show a Japanese boat colliding with the Bao Diao II 'forcing the Chinese vessel to change its course,' according to a translation of the Japanese voice over and concludes with an image, shot from a helicopter, of the Hong Kong boat wedged between two Japanese Coast Guard boats, apparently under Japanese control.
Missing from the video is any clear view of the activists actually walking on the Senkakus. One shot appears to show several people standing on shore of one of the islands, but the graininess of the footage makes it difficult to tell whether they are activists or members of the Japanese coast guard.

The speed with which Japan released the footage is noteworthy, particularly after Japanese authorities came under fire for failing to release footage of an inflammatory 2010 confrontation near the islands between the Coast Guard and a Chinese fishing boat. Footage of that clash was eventually leaked onto YouTube, prompting right-wing critics to blast the government for lack of transparency.
According to the Japan Times, the Coast Guard this time released 30 minutes of video, culled from roughly seven hours of total footage. The newspaper said footage that might reveal Japan's patrolling techniques and formations was edited out. It's not clear what other scenes may have ended up on the cutting room floor.
The release of the footage appears to have been planned before the Monday afternoon theft of the flag on Ambassador Uichiro Niwa's car. That incident, which drew cheers from many Chinese Internet users, led to a 'strong protest' from the Japanese embassy and assurances from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs that authorities were 'seriously investigating' the matter.
A statement from the Japanese embassy said the ambassador was not hurt and no other damage was done to the vehicle.
The flag-snatching episode appears to have embarrassed even the Global Times, one of China's most reliably nationalistic tabloids. In a commentary titled 'Assaulting vehicles is no help to diplomacy,' the newspaper speculated that the man responsible for the incident might have been suffering from a mental condition. Stealing the flag, it went on to say, was a 'childish action' that would only provide right-wing voices in Japan with more ammunition.
