Cost of living
Musical notes (and coins)
How much do you think you spend on music? According to research by UK finance company Prudential, the average person in the UK spends ¡ê21,270 on music over a lifetime! This figure includes everything from CDs, vinyl, and music downloads, to the equipment it is played on, plus music magazines, gigs, festivals and other events.
Brits who say 'they love music and could not live without it' (11% of the population), spend over double that amount, with ¡ê1,431 of that going on equipment such as CD players, speakers, cables and MP3 players. The highest number of these die-hard fans are in London (14%), closely followed by the North West and the North East (13% each).
'It doesn't surprise me that a 'die-hard' fan spends that much on music. I'm a bit of a music completist for my favourite bands. In the last month I've spent ¡ê95 on getting hold of obscure vinyl on ebay' Mark, 28, from Louth, Lincolnshire
Millionaires
But what about spending in general? We spend a staggering ¡ê1.5 million on average during our lifetime, so where does it all go? Housing, clothing and food are the biggest expenses, costing an average of ¡ê552,772. We'll also pay out ¡ê286,311 on income and council taxes.
The results also highlight major differences in spending levels between north and south. Unsurprisingly, the cost of living in London was estimated to be over ¡ê500,000 more than the UK average.
'Most of my money seems to go on going out, I'm not a big saver, but then again I would save more if I earned more money. I'm only 23 so saving is not something that worries me too much at the moment.'
