　　Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking and Russian billionaire YuriMilner are
pushing the search for extraterrestrial life into highergear. The pair said
Monday the $100m program funded byMilner will combine unprecedented computing
capacity with theworld's most powerful telescopes in a search of the
heavens.Milner said the search will be entirely transparent and will rely
onopen-source software so findings can be shared throughout theworld.
        　　著名物理学家史蒂芬·霍金和俄罗斯亿万富豪尤里·米尔纳的联合将外星人搜索推向了一个全新的高度。两人20日透露，将由米尔纳出资1亿美元，以前所未有的方式充分利用计算机技术和世界上最强大的望远镜，开启太空搜寻。米尔纳表示，搜寻将全程透明，且使用开源软件，保证最终的发现成果由全世界共享。
        　　外星人用英文表示可以是alien，这个词也有外国人、陌生的等含义。此外上文中的extraterrestriallife可以表示外星生命，这是个天文学名词。ET也可以表示外星人，是extraterrestrial的缩写。智慧外星人即extraterrestrial
intelligence。此次寻找外星人计划的英文为search for extraterrestrialintelligence，简称SETI。

        　　在此次伦敦皇家科学学会寻找外星生命迹象的启动仪式上，霍金说：“在无限的茫茫宇宙中(in aninfinite
universe)，一定存在着其它形式的生命( other occurrences of
life)。或许外星生命会正盯着我们看呢。不管怎样，这都是最重要的问题。是时候有人来找出这个问题的答案了，去寻找地球以外的生命(search for life
beyond Earth)。弄清楚我们到底是不是黑暗中孤独的存在，这点对我们很重要。”
