(The

The Economist - Chinese investors jokingly call the central bank "central
mama". They thanked herfor dispensing a bit of love over the weekend by trimming
interest rates and reducing somelenders’ required reserves. The rate cut, her
fourth since November, took one-year benchmarklending rates to 4.85%, a record
low for China. And it would be misleading to describe the centralbank’s easing
as simply a knee-jerk reaction to the stockmarket sell-off. With the limited
nature ofits RRR cut, the impression is that it wants to support the economy
without refuelling the stockmania. Even central mama's love has its limits.
The People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, again cut the
requirement reserve ratio(RRR) and lowered key interest rates on Saturday. The
central bank cut the RRR for commercialbanks serving rural areas, agriculture
and small businesses by 50 basis points. The RRR for financecompanies will be
lowered by 300 basis points, the PBOC announced. Benchmark interest rateshave
also been cut. Interest rates for one-year lending and deposits are cut by 25
basis points to4.85 percent and 2 percent respectively. Lending of other terms
and kinds will also be lowered bythe same margin, the announcement said. The
adjustment will take effect on Sunday.
