Well, in fact, according to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, lettuce
is a round vegetable with thin green leaves used in salads. In other words, the
word lettuce should not be used as a general term when referring all kinds of
leaves in salads.
        　　我们通常把那些绿色的(各种浅绿、深绿色的)叶子叫做“lettuce(生菜)”。事实上，根据《朗文当代高级英语词典》的解释，lettuce(生菜)是一种圆形的蔬菜，有绿色的薄叶子，会拌在沙拉里。也就是，lettuce并不是一种所谓的通称，并不能用来指代所有拌在沙拉里的蔬菜。

leaves taste differently -- peppery, mildly sweet, bitter, etc. -- and pair well
with different dressings or meat.
