Choosirig not to marry is a new phencimenon. Most cases in the past were
due to various objective reasons. However, nowa days, for most people who choose
not to get married, it's their voluntary choice. According to the statistics,
the population of singles aged between 30 to 50 in Beijing and Shanghai has
reached 500 000, among whom 60 percent are female. Some 3S ladies refuse
marriage to keep their freedom while others refuse all less-than-perfect
marriage proposals.

The 3S ladies mostly have the characteristics of the "threehigh": high
level of education, high income and high social status. They usually pursue
perfect love. They are convinced that marriage is not the only way of life.
Therefore, before meeting their ideal men , they would rather stay single than
marry someone they don't like. After all, unlike eating and breathing, marriage
is not necessary for life.
"剩女"们大都拥有"三高"高学历、高收入、高地位。在情感方面，她们通常追求完美，并且深信一种说法:结婚并不是生活的唯一出路。因此在没有遇到理想中的结婚伴侣前，她们选择宁缺毋滥。毕竟，结婚并不像吃饭、呼吸一样是人生不可或缺的事。
