The disgraced Uruguay striker released a statement on Twitter in which he
effectively admitted lying to FIFA over the infamous World Cup flashpoint with
the Italy defender.
Yesterday's public declaration was anticipated and is designed to help
smooth his potential move from Liverpool to Barcelona by indicating a
willingness on the part of the player to change, although few observers will
take him at his word.
Suarez has been suspended from "all football-related activity" until late
October after sinking his teeth into the shoulder of Chiellini last week, the
third time he has bitten a rival on the field of play.
The forward initially claimed in a written submission to FIFA last week he
had lost his balance and fallen into Chiellini with his teeth.
But after spending time with his family in Montevideo and speaking with his
agent, Pere Guardiola, Suarez decided to come clean over the "reality" of what
actually happened.
The statement, entitled "My apologies to Chiellini", read: "After several
days of being home with my family, I have had the opportunity to regain my calm
and reflect about the reality of what occurred during the Italy-Uruguay match on
24 June 2014.
"Independent from the fallout and the contradicting declarations that have
surfaced during these past days, all of which have been without the intention of
interfering with the good performance of my national team, the truth is that my
colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the
collision he suffered with me.
"For this, I deeply regret what occurred. I apologise to Girogio Chiellini
and the entire football family. I vow to the public that there will never again
be another incident like this."
