Four years ago in South Africa definately a tournament for the 1998 winners to forget, in-fighting and arguments raged as Les blues were eliminated in the first round. Now in 2014 they've qualified again and are determined to make up for last time. And the team taking the spotlight today is France.
The name France is derived from the Franks, a Germanic tribe that took over most of the area that makes up modern France. In 1830, Louis Antoine D'Artois was technically king of France for just 20 minutes. Today, France is the most visited country in the world. French entertainer Michel Lotito became famous for eating indigestible objects including bicycles, glass, televisions, and even an aeroplane. It was the French who were the first to achieve a manned hot air balloon flight, and they invented the modern parachute. It was also a Frenchman who scored the first-ever goal at the FIFA World Cup, and today, notable French clubs include Paris Saint-Germain, Saint Etienne, and Olympique de Marseille, and the national team's nickname is Les Bleus, or the Blues.
July the 12th, 1998, marked a seminal moment in France's football history. In the newly-built Stade de France, two goals from Zidane and another from Emmanuel Petit won Les Bleus their first FIFA World Cup, and revived the country's pride in their football team.
Lifting the FIFA World Cup that day was captain Didier Deschamps. It was the climax of a trophy-laden career. Fourteen years after that victory in 1998, he was giving the opportunity to bring his winning mentality to a struggling national side. He's since boosted morale and unified the team.
The match against the Swiss takes place on the 20th of June, five days after Les Bleus kick off their campaign against Honduras. They conclude the Group Stage in Rio against Ecuador.
