Though China will not be represented at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil,
its presence will be keenly felt off the field.
Companies in eastern Anhui province are busy churning out millions of
"Fuleco the Armadillo", the mascot of the World Cup. One manufacturer says
orders for the doll represent 80 percent of its year-round sales revenues.
The World Cup is also a boon for other Chinese companies. To bring torrid
soccer fans in Rio de Janeiro a little fresh air, Chinese companies have been
called on to upgrade subway facilities, including air conditioning. Insiders say
"Made in China" is gaining in reputation not just for being affordable, but also
for being of high quality.
