The Global Times, a nationalist tabloid owned by People’s Daily, the ruling Communist party’s mouthpiece, said in an editorial published on Monday that an extradition would be unwise and “not only a betrayal of Snowden’s trust but a disappointment for expectations around the world.” Last Friday, the paper had demanded Beijing extract more information from Mr Snowden, arguing that his knowledge was relevant to China’s national interest and Beijing should not ignore this for the sake of good relations with Washington.
In a web-chat with Guardian readers and journalists on Monday, Mr Snowden defended his claim that NSA analysts could tap almost anyone’s phone calls or emails, including American citizens – a claim that has been disputed by government officials and members of Congress. If a government intelligence analyst had access to the right databases, “they can enter and get results for anything they want. Phone number, email, user id, cell phone handset id, and so on – it’s all the same,” he said.
Mr Snowden also said it was relatively easy for intelligence officials to get legal approval to look at emails. “It’s important to understand the intelligence community doesn’t always deal with what you would consider a “real” warrant like a Police department would have to, the “warrant” is more of a templated form they fill out and send to a reliable judge with a rubber stamp,” he said.
Testimony by US intelligence officials and statements from technology companies such as Apple, Facebook and Microsoft have already sought to demonstrate that the US government’s use of Prism was narrowly focused on preventing terrorist attacks or rescuing people in danger.
But Chinese technology experts say the Prism programme could make it easier for Beijing to argue that the internet surveillance practised by Washington makes US technology companies as much a national security risk for China as some Chinese groups, such as Huawei, have been accused of posing in Washington.
