Pakistan's prime minister is rejecting claims that the killing of Osama bin
Laden in a U.S. raid showed his country was complicit or incompetent in allowing
the al-Qaida leader to hide out in Pakistan.
In a speech to parliament Monday, Yousuf Raza Gilani called such
allegations absurd. He said it was "disingenuous" for anyone to insinuate that
Pakistani authorities, including the country's spy agency, were aligned with
al-Qaida. He voiced support for the military and the spy agency, which he said
was a national asset.
U.S. special forces killed bin Laden during a raid on a compound in the
Pakistani city of Abbottabad last week. Prime Minister Gilani said the terrorist
leader's death was proper justice.
The Pakistani leader also blamed "all intelligence agencies of the world"
for failing to detect bin Laden's lair, and ordered an investigation into
how the al-Qaida leader was able to hide out in Pakistan. A top army
general will lead the probe.
