Tai Lake, a freshwater lake in Chinese east, has an area of 2250 square
kilometers. The lake is the third-larggest freshwater lake in China, after
Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake. It houses about 90 islands, ranging in size from
a few square meters to a few square kilometers. Tai Lake is famous for its “Tai
Lake Stone” which is used to decorate Chinese traditional gardens. The lake is
also well-known for its fishing industry. Since the late 1970s, catching fishes
and crabs has been particularly important for residents along the lake and has
contributed much to the economy of surrounding areas. Tai Lake area is one of
Chinese ceramics’ bases and the manufacturers in Yixing produce world-famous
clay teapots.

Qinghai Lake is located in about 100 kilometers west of the provincial
capital of Xining at 3205 meters above sea level. Qinghai Lake is the biggest
salt-water lake in China, with a surface area of 4371 square kilometers, and a
maximum depth of 25.5 meters. There are 23 rivers flowing into the lake and most
of them are seasonal. 80 percent of the lake water originates from five main
rives. Qinghai Lake is located atthe crossroads of several bird migration routes
across Asia. Many birds use the lake as an intermediate stop during migration.
On the west side of the lake are the famous “Bird Island” which attracts bird
watchers around the world. In summer, tourists also come here to watch the
international bicycle races.

Dongting Lake is a large, shallow lake in northeastern Hunan province,
China. Dongting Lake is the reservoir of the Yangtze River and the size of lake
largely depends on the change of season. Hubei and Hunan are named for the
relative location from the lake. Hubei means “the north of the lake” while Hunan
means “the south of the lake”. As the original place of Dragon Boat Racing,
Dongting Lake enjoys a high reputation in Chinses culture. It is said that the
races originated from the east bank of the lake and the aim was to search for
the remains of Quyuan, a patriotic poet in the State of Chu. Every year, dragon
boat racing and the surrounding beautiful sceneries around the lake attract
