Located at 3205 meters above sea level and about 100 kilometers away from
the west of Xining, the capital city of Qinghai, Qinghai Lake is the largest
salt water lake in China. It covers an area of 4317 square kilometers and its
deepest point is 25.5miters. There are 23 rivers running into it, most of which
are seasonal, and 80% of the lake water comes from the major five rivers.
Qinghai Lake lies at the junction of several migratory routes of birds which
cross Asia. Therefore, most birds regard Qinghai Lake as their temporary habitat
during the trip. In the west of the lake is the famous Bird Island, attracting
birdwatchers from all over the world. Every summer, visitors also come here to
watch international cycling race.
