妇女通常戴银冠、银手镯(bracelet)，全身都佩戴银链子，而且是越多越好，越重越好，以此来展示自己的美丽和财富。穿着华丽服装的苗族女人，身上的银饰可以重达10
到15 公斤。饰品(ornament)也可以作为爱情承诺的信物，儿童避邪(ward off evil forces)
的吉祥物(mascot)，甚至还可以直接作为货币流通或存储。因此，苗族的银饰不仅是装饰，也是一种植根于苗族社会生活的文化载体(carrier)。
