Giving monetary gift through WeChat, China’s major instant messaging app,
has become a popular holiday custom, with people born in the 1980’s being the
most active group, according to latest data of WeChat.
据微信最新公布的数据显示，用微信发红包已经成为了一个流行的节日习俗，其中80后是最活跃的一群人。
On Friday alone, the eve of 2017 lunar new year, a record of some 14.2
billion electronic hongbaos, or red packets containing gift money, were given
and received, according to WeChat, which is operated by Tencent.
单单上周五除夕夜一天，通过微信收发的红包数量就达到了142亿个。
Those who were born in the 1980s have sent and received the most red
packets last year compared to those born in the 1990s and 1970s.
相比于90后和70后，80后去年收发红包最多。
WeChat data also showed that men tend to give out more hongbaos than women.
Geographically, people in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Hunan lead in giving
and receiving red packets.
微信的数据还显示，男性比女性更倾向于多发红包。从地理上看，广东、江苏、浙江和湖南的人们在收发红包方面处于领先地位。
It is a tradition of Chinese to give hongbao to friends and relatives
during Spring Festival. Nowadays, Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day and other local
festivals are also the peak times for red packets.
春节期间给亲朋好友发红包是中国人的一个传统。而现在，情人节、父亲节和其他本土节日也是红包高峰时期。
This year, new forms of red packets such as "face-to-face and AR red
packets" were adopted. Lin Yuwen, a Beijing resident, said he distributed red
packets totaling 1,200 yuan (175 U.S. dollars) on Friday, almost double the
amount last year.
今年还采用了“面对面和AR红包”等新形式。北京居民林玉文(音)表示说，他在除夕那天就发了1200(约合175美元)元红包，差不多是去年的2倍。
Analysts say the electronic red packets are used by Internet giants to
expand their shares in the mobile payment market.
