So it's nearly four months since Greece bowed to what the government there described as the inevitable and accepted Europe and the IMF's terms for an economic bailout. It was the story if you remember that weighed on everything. Grexit, could it mean the death of the Eurozone, could it kill off global economic recovery? So how, I ask, has the country fared since then? The BBC's Simon Jack is back in Athens this week. He's testing the mood. Simon, what have you found there?
Well, we're here this week, but in particular, because the banks here in Greece have been under the spotlight. They've been through what they called stress tests. And banking here as you remember, as you said in your introduction, has been a pretty stressful business. Billions in deposits left when it looked like Greece might fall out of the Eurozone. Cash was rationed. Back in the summer you're only allowed to take out £50, €60 a day. That's been relaxed slightly but still the banks in some distress. Now they've raised additional money, some from the bailout funds agreed back in August, but also some from private investors which would have been hard to imagine just a few months ago. And the government here is keen now to turn the page in this story from debt and depression to one on future growth and hope. |
