The Volkswagen emission scandal has again moved up a gear. It's emerged today that more VW cars in the US were fitted with devices allowing engines to cheat on pollution tests than originally thought. US regulators say that the German company has acknowledged the software was in 85,000 VW, Audi and Porsche vehicles with three-litre engines going back to 2009. Earlier this month the agency believed the devices were in 10,000 models from the 2014 to 2016 period. Chris Low is from the US investment firm FTN Financial. I asked him how much more damaging he thinks is going to get for VW.
It's hard to judge exactly. I have seen estimates that ultimately this is going to be so bad that it'd cut a full percentage point from German GDP growth. But it clearly is affecting people's attitudes toward the company. I was in China last week. Their emission standards aren't as strict as US standards. So in that sense Volkswagen's okay. But talking to people they say Chinese consumers swerve that they don't like being lied to and most of the people I spoke to said they'd think twice before they went for a Volkswagen which is a real issue given that VW dominates the Chinese market. It's the bestselling car in the country.
