But first there's a chance this week that for the first time Iran could join the United States and Russia in talks about the Syrian conflict. The US state department spokesman John Kirby said Iran is likely to be invited. I asked our Washington correspondent Gary O'Donoghue if the invitation is a surprise.
"It's the first time they've been formally invited to take part in this sort of central talks between the main regional powers, and the US and Russia of course. They were invited some time ago by the UN, but that didn't actually happen. So it is a significant move and it's a reflection, I think, of the reality on the ground which is that the Russia's involvement in Syria has now transformed the landscape there. And of course we've known for some time that Iran has backed President Assad, backed his regime, being present on the ground as well I think this is probably a recognition that if there's going to be any kind of deal and this doesn't make a deal particularly easy by the way, but if there's gonna be any kind of deal, it would probably have to involve Iran and Russia taking part in that." |
