Well it's now a week since American authority set off a firestorm around the world's biggest car maker Volkswagen when the Environmental Protection Agency declared VW had been cheating the results of emissions tests. Since then investigations have been launched around the world. Volkswagen's share price has tanked and its chief executive Martin Winterkorn quit. Well Volkswagen board members have been locked in meetings all day long. In the last hour they've been holding a press conference at their Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany where they've confirmed the appointment of Matthias Müller, the current Porsche head, as the new VW chief executive. Well Volkswagen's acting chairman Berthold Huber said during the conference that the scandal surrounding emissions tests had been disastrous for the company. Here he is with his words spoken by a translator.
I would like to say very clearly that the test manipulations of diesel engines mean a moral and political disaster for Volkswagen. The illegal development on the illegal behaviour of developers and engineers in the development of engines has shocked the board as much as the public. |
