"Have you heard about the fence?" I asked Hannah, an asylum seeker from Adithria as she tried to keep her sprightly 18-month-old daughter and five-year-old son off the main road, while her husband fled our cameras.
"I saw it." she whispered.
Would it have stopped her?
"Nothing will stop us now." she said.
A man driving a red tractor, slowed down and handed Hannah a shiny tractor-coloured apple. The locals have mostly had enough of migrants, but there are still individual acts of kindness.
I've never seen the square in front of the handsome railway station in Szeged looking so tidy, despite the presence of several dozen asylum seekers waiting on the benches, washing at the basins and chatting with volunteers who offer food, tea and advice from a smart wooden cabin donated by the socialist-run local council. Szeged is a small island of opposition to the fetus government, a city trying to show a friendlier face to the migrants. Around 200 volunteers take part in helping them in several shifts. They also tried to protect them from those taxi drivers who ask extortionate sums for the two-hour ride to Budapest, and the volunteers washed the square and even cleaned the railway station toilets for a while. The toilet attendant wept when she saw them.
"I've never seen such clean latrines." she told one volunteer from the Migrant Solidarity Group. The vast majority of migrants reaching Hungary are on their way to Germany, the Netherlands or Sweden. While Hungary has registered around 120,000 this year, Germany has registered over 300,000. |
