The ports were shut down, transport system's hit and even the postal service was interrupted as 30,000 people took to the streets protesting against austerity. Not as you might expect in Greece but 3,000 miles north in Finland, a country which was an enthusiastic backer of harsh Greek cuts and reforms. Finland was once one of the top performers in the Eurozone but it's been in recession for the last three years. Now the government wants to introduce tough new measures to reverse their fortunes. So here's what protesters had to say in the capital Helsinki.
"The situation in Finland is very bad at the moment and I don't really accept this kind of things what our government are doing now against all normal people here in Finland."
"We want to show that we don't want these salary reductions because practical nurses their salaries isn't so high. And now the government is trying to sink it down. It's a really awful thing."
In a rare televised address earlier this week, the Prime Minister Juha Sipilä said it was an exceptionally serious situation.
"The economic growth in Finland is the lowest in Europe and the economy has been shrinking for a long time in no other European country does the unemployment grow as fast as it does in Finland. Finnish work and production have lost their competitive edge. We have increased our debt faster than any EU countries on average. State and municipal expenses are distinctly bigger than income. Our employment rate is far from the level of our competitors." |
