Today we bring you the turbulent story of two political activists in Syria. They fell in love in prison, married, and had children. But living under war and repression eventually tore their marriage apart. They are the subject of a new film by the award-winning British documentary maker Sean McAllister. He's been making films about the Arab world for over 20 years. In 2009, two years before the start of the uprising in Syria, he went to Damascus to find subjects for a new project.
I'm actively looking to be involved with who I film, you know, and a good indication is exactly how I met Amer really, when we were drinking one night in a park in the old city of Damascus through a friend. And he took a telephone call, and he finished the call. I said: "Who was that?" He said: "It's my wife. She's in prison." And I said: "Wow. How can you, you know, firstly, how on earth to get a phone in the prison?" And then he explains that they sneaked a phone into the prison and he kind of looked at me cynically and said: "If you really want to make a film about Syria, come and film me."
I can see why you were drawn to the story because it is quite an incredible story. Amer, I wonder if you can tell us how you met your wife Ragdha in the first place?
I was in prison. I was sentenced to three years in a Palestine branch in jail. And the first time I saw her, I just spotted her through the key hole. She was being brought back from a long torture session. And that was the first time I set eyes on her. And then we started communicating through the wall, the common wall. And after that, we actually made a hole through the wall and we started talking to each other. |
