Prince Ali bin Hussein of Jordan is said to announce that he will run for the FIFA presidency in February following the departure of Sepp Blatter. Prince Ali joins the UEFA President Michel Platini and the former FIFA Chief Executive Chung Mong-joon in declaring their interest in football's top job. Europe has supported Ali in June's election when he was up against Sepp Blatter. But with much of that support likely to be behind Michel Platini, what chance does he have this time around? Here's our football reporter Steve Crossman.
I actually think he could probably replace all of the votes that he loses in Europe with votes in his own confederation in Asia, because last time Asia was behind Sepp Blatter. So that's 46 votes now open to him. It does get more complicated still though, because the other man to declare an interest Chung Mong-joon is from South Korea. He'll be looking for those votes, too. So probably the ideal situation for Prince Ali is that Chung Mong-joon doesn't receive the necessary backing even to stand at all because I'm not sure Prince Ali can win if that vote is split. |
