Researchers say the number of people living with dementia in parts of Western Europe is stabilising which is a bit surprising because the incidence has been increasing as people live longer and that process continues. So what might be happening? Well, improved lifestyle is one possibility. Carol Brayne is professor of Public Health at Cambridge University. What lifestyle changes might help prevent dementia?

We know that the risk factors associated with increased dementia come in the area of education, physical activity, midlife obesity, hypertension, stroke, vascular problems, depression, cigarette smoking. And some of those are sort of risk factors for other conditions and then those conditions are then risk factors for dementia like stroke.

If you take things like obesity, the impression is this is more of a factor and so you'd thought that dementia rates might be going up.

Yeah, these studies are focused on the 65 plus. So the early cohorts were the generations who were born in the first part of the last century and the later cohorts that we've reported on are from the sort of prewar, around the war and some of those studies have been recruiting people postwar as well. But those cohorts have gone to their lives with very different exposure to education for example and facts like smoking and so on. And so these things are going up and down in each generation.
