Now an American political activist has come up with a highly unusual way of getting his message across. Igor Vamos uses the stage name Mike Bonnano, and ten years ago teamed up with a friend to form a performance duo called "The Yes Men". They pose as top executives from big corporations, surprising unsuspecting audiences with outrageous stunts that comment on social and environmental issues. Outlook's Joan P. asked Mike whether he'd always been into pranks.
I guess I was interested in mischief from a very young age. But I would say that it didn't really come into its own until maybe junior high school, when me and friends and my brother, older brother used to do all sorts of pranks, you know, just for fun.
Like what, in class?
Well, sometimes in class and sometimes outside the class. I remember, well, there were some really strange things that we did. Like there was a courtyard in the centre of the school and we decided one day to take an old car that we found in a junkyard and take it apart piece by piece and reassemble it at night in the courtyard of the school so there was just a car that appeared in there. There was no purpose that I know of. It was just mischief. It was just to do something unexpected or surprising, and I guess in a way that comes out of rebelling against uniformity. |
