We begin with the surveillance row between the government and judiciary in Germany. It all centres on accusations that a political blog may have revealed state secrets. The justice minister, Heiko Maas, has now sacked the country's most senior prosecutor who'd been investigating the allegations.
"The remarks on the course of action chosen by the federal prosecutor Range today are incomprehensible and give the public a false impression. I've told the federal prosecutor that my confidence in his ability to carry out his duties has been shaken, and therefore in an agreement with the chancellor's office, I will ask the president to remove him from office."
It's all a bit complicated, so we got our Berlin correspondent Damien McGuinness to tell us what it's all about.
"Well, what happen, Jackie, is that two journalists published confidential documents on their websites and these documents indicate that Germany's intelligence service is planning to expand its online surveillance to combat terrorism and that a special unit would be set up to monitor social media. But the problem was that the state prosecutor said that this information was confidential and they would then be investigated for treason." |
