But first, there's been an international outcry about the killing of Cecil the lion by an American dentist hunting in Zimbabwe. The case has started a passionate debate about how to save the dwindling numbers of lions left in Africa. For award-winning filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, the debate is nothing new. The South African-born couple have devoted their lives to getting as close as possible to Africa's big cats, and they've set up the Big Cats Initiative which carries out conservation work in a number of African countries. Dereck and Beverly are based in Botswana and spend most of their time living in the bush. On a break in Johannesburg, I asked Beverly how they met.
Dereck and I met many years ago, actually in high school. But shortly after graduating, we both wanted to go on an adventure, and the adventure was, you know, going into Botswana. And once we were there, we pretty much realised that this was gonna be our life.
What was it, Dereck, that drew you to that pursuit?
Well, you know I think that Africa has always been fascinating for us. We were born and bred here, but we grew up in South Africa. And I think that what we wanted to do is go out into the real Africa, and experience those big, wild, open places, and live with lions and experience that edginess, that harshness and that possibly adrenaline.
