综合能力 all-round ability

　　针对当前教育领域存在的一些违背规律、影响正常教育教学秩序问题，教育部要求切实减轻学生过重的课业负担，坚决纠正各种随意侵占学生休息时间、加深课程难度、增减课程和课时等做法。
　　The principle of striving to develop students' all-round abilities in areas such as morals, intelligence, physical fitness, work and aesthetics has not changed since the founding of New China, but people seem to ignore that nowadays. 自新中国成立以来，努力培养学生德、智、体、美、劳全面发展的宗旨一直都没有改变，但现在人们似乎已经忽略了这个宗旨。
　　上面的报道中，develop students’ all-round abilities是“培养学生的综合能力”，也就是我们通常所说的“全面发展”，这里的“全面”(all-round)涵盖的范围上文中也提到了，分别是morals(德), intelligence(智), physical fitness(体), work(劳) and aesthetics(美)五个方面。
　　All-round在这里的意思是“全面的，综合的”，对学生来说就是各个方面都有所发展;那么在我们的国家建设中，“全面建设小康社会”就是to advance China into a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way。而在体育界，all-round athlete就是“全能运动员”，去年奥运会上杨威拿到的体操“全能冠军”则是all-round champion/title。
