纪念仪式 memorial

　　在印度洋海啸周年到来之际，受灾各国正分别举行各种仪式，悼念这场大悲剧。在海啸受灾最严重的印度尼西亚亚齐，哀悼仪式在26日8时16分开始，即去年第一个巨浪扑向当地的时候。在斯里兰卡，纪念活动的情况是这样的：
　　In Sri Lanka, President Mahinda Rajapakse will hold a memorial at a site near Galle where more than 1,000 passengers are thought to have died when the waves engulfed their train. Later, women survivors will form a candle-light chain along the coast.
　　文中的memorial表示“纪念仪式”，memorial作名词用时，还可用来指“纪念物(如纪念碑或纪念日)”以及“历史记载”等，如：memorial to the martyrs(烈士纪念碑);memorials of a past age(过去年代的历史记载)。此外，memorial可用作形容词，意为“纪念性的;记忆的”，比如，memorial sculpture(纪念性雕塑)。
　　除memorial外，commemoration也可指“纪念仪式;纪念活动”。
