THE younger generation may have come to take Chinese characters which they see every day for granted.

Although young people are aware that characters have complicated and difficult "classical" meanings, all that seems like ancient history.

Many students can't even read, not to mention write, traditional full-form Chinese characters.

It would be hard for them to imagine returning to the days when one's three-character name might easily consist of 50 strokes in all.

In fact, the debate over characters has never really stopped.

Pan Qinglin, a Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference member, proposed at this year's session that China change the simplified characters, which have been in use since 1956, back to full-form characters within 10years.

It's hardly surprising that this bold, or perhaps crotchety, proposal was instantly controversial.

According to Pan, the simplified version has lost much of the charm and sophistication of the traditional characters.

Taiwan still uses the full-form, so switching the mainland back would help unite the country, he maintains.

Opponents naturally point out that simplified characters have dominated on the mainland China for more than 50 years and it would be extremely difficult and costly to change that.

Moreover, the traditional characters are much harder to learn, read and write, which is why the simplified form was used in the first place, to expand literacy.

The change would limit the possibility of the Chinese language to spread to more parts of the world.

So what is your opinion? Does it make sense for China to turn back the hands of time?
