I have first heard the name of Yue Fei from my primary school teacher. In the innocent mind of a child, it is always emotional bitter that an upright hero was framed by some baddies. From then on, every time I ate “youtiao” for breakfast, the image of the evil couple would come out and my bites would turn to be some kind of revenge for our hero.Even to this day, the glory of Yue Fei never fades. His heroic deeds, the military accomplishments, the tattoos on his back, the twelve golden medals and the execution, are fascinating materials in storytelling.
In fact, with the modern moral standard, I barely understand his blind loyalty towards the emperor. I cannot help asking that whether he could anticipate that his return would lead to the final collapse of the dynasty. Obeying the order, he paid his loyalty to an idiot, but not to the interest of the Empire. Just make an unrealistic assumption. If there had been any flexible bones in his body, the destination of the Dynasty might have been rewritten.
Yue Fei, indeed, was a great military leader but he failed to gauge the intention of his emperor as well as he was unable to set the king’s mind at ease. The right-minded general and the fatuous emperor performed an eternal tragedy which is always a wound in the hearts of Chinese.
