背景介绍：
Mainland and Hong Kong media have ruined 10 Chinese words during the past 10 years. Among them are "xiaojie(lady)", "meinyu(belle)" and "zhuanjia(expert)". "Xiaojie" was originally a honorific for unmarried women. Now it's a synonym for prostitute. "Meinyu" used to mean a belle, but now it merely means female. "Zhuanjia" has also been degraded to mean a fake expert who makes irresponsible remarks for money.
内地和香港媒体十年来毁掉十个词，小姐、美女、专家等词入选。小姐原来是对未婚女子的尊称，现已成了妓女的代名词；美女曾指容貌美丽的女子，现在只要性别是女，统统称为美女；专家曾是内行的意思，现如今则意味着为获利信口雌黄的假内行。

I take this kind of change as part of the culture transition in our society, especially with the new media altering from day to day and innovations following fast upon one another.
These changed words are characterized by some common points. First, almost all of their changes are brought out in the past decade which has witnessed the explosion of Internet and social media. Second, they experience a transformation from laudatory meaning to derogatory sense or neutrality, more or less. Third, closely related to our age, there are many specific events lying behind these words. Moreover, dripping with sarcasm, the new meanings lash out at lots of undesirable tendencies.
Although some of us do not take the absurd changes for granted, even cannot keep up with their pace sometimes, the changes based on the need of our culture adjust themselves to society, with an increasing speed and great numbers.

Words are sometimes unreliable. One day, when I entered a clothes shop, the shopkeeper welcomed me with “LiangNyu” (靓女) and I felt very happy. After a while, I heard another “LN”. As I turned around, I found it was an ordinary housewife in her forties. It was by then that I understood that “LN” is for every potential custom. Words now are having “evil” association too. One night I said to my friends that “V speaks English well”(V 操着一口漂亮的英语), and they all laughed at the verb “Cao”. Also, “Xiaojie” used to be an active part of my daily speech whenever I address a lady. However, as the meaning of the phrase degrades, I found myself in an awkward situation whenever I want to address a female, especially a female of my age. I usually call them “Tongxue”(同学) or simply skip the address, just saying “Hello” to arouse their attention. Worse still, I become uncomfortable when someone addresses me as “Chen Xiaojie”even though there is no offence in the speech. Our vocabulary is changing and enlarging. Yet I am always running out of words.

Our language has undergone tremendous changes in the past decade as many words have gone far away from its original meanings. Ten Chinese words that have been ruined by mainland and Hong Kong media are being discussed heatedly among the society. The huge transition of words, in my point of view, is actually a symbolic representation of social development. "Zhuanjia" which used to describe those who are really knowledgeable and experienced in a certain field, has become a negative word only to mean a fake expert who is obsessed with economic profits regardless of taking responsibility. Nowadays, it is not rare to find out that many people are boastful of their abilities in order to impress others. What's worse, this kind of exaggeration is like a dangerous epidemic, which has been widely spread across our society. I really believe that all of us should introspect the emergence of boasting and exaggeration.

Each ruined word reminds me of a series of social events, where we can catch a glimpse of the symptoms that a transforming China society is suffering. Among them what impresses me most is the tinned milk scandal in 2008.
The scandal unfortunately destroyed the word "milk powder" - turning it from food to poison. It involves milk and infant formula, and other food materials and components, adulterated with melamine. The scandal broke on 16th July 2008, after sixteen infants in Gansu Province, who had been fed on milk powder produced by Shijiazhuang-based Sanlu Group, were diagnosed with kidney stones. By November 2008, China reported an estimated 300,000 victims, with some infants dying from kidney stones and other kidney damage, and an estimated 54,000 babies being hospitalised. This isolated accident not only revealed a ignominious deception to customers for simple, basic, short-term profits, but also added enormous heat to the widespread complaints at home and abroad about tainted Chinese-made food and medicine.
Traditional Chinese culture holds that food is the paramount necessity of the people. However, if a regime, centralized, powerful and economically prosperous as it is preached, cannot even guarantee the safety of its people's food, then it is a dangerous signal more than an embarrassment to the nation's leaders.
