Dentists always ask questions when it is impossible for you to answer. My dentist had just pulled out one of my teeth and had told me to rest for a while. I tried to say something, but my mouth was full of cotton wool. He knew I collected match boxes and asked me whether my collection was growing. He then asked me how my brother was and whether I liked my new job in London. In answer to these questions I either nodded or made strange noises. Meanwhile, my tongue was busy searching out the hole where the tooth had been. I suddenly felt very worried, but could not say anything. When the dentist at last removed the cotton wool from my mouth, I was able to tell him that he had pulled out the wrong tooth.

1、I tried to say something, but my mouth was full of cotton wool.
try to do sth.:试图做某事（但不一定能做成）
cotton wool：不可数名词
2、He knew I collected match boxes and asked me whether my collection was growing.
collection：收集品的总和，常用单数
grow：增加
3、He then asked me how my brother was and whether I liked my new job in London.
注意2个宾语从句的词序（陈述句词序）
4、In answer to these questions I either nodded or made strange noises.
In answer to these questions：作为对这些问题的回答
in return for 作为对...的报答
either...or:或者...或者...
5、Meanwhile, my tongue was busy searching out the hole where the tooth had been.
meanwhile=at the same time=in the mean time;[U]用法和 however 一样,不能连接两个句子,但是意思上有承接概念[/U]
where the tooth had been:定语从句修饰hole
the tooth:the tooth that had been pulled out
be busy doing sth.:忙着做...
search out:找出/找到
6、When the dentist at last removed the cotton wool from my mouth, I was able to tell him that he had pulled out the wrong tooth.
removed the cotton wool from my mouth=took the cotton wool out of my mouth.
was able to:表示在某种特殊情形下能....，此处不能用could代替
