　　1. 主要表示意外事故。如：
        　　The accident happened at about 5.30. 事故大约发生在5点半钟。
        　　Poor Jim has just had an accident. 可怜的吉姆刚出了个事故。
        　　The accident was due to carelessness. 这起车祸是由粗心造成的。
        　　有时也表示偶然发生的意外事件，不一定是“事故”。如：
        　　I’m sorry I broke the glass. It was an accident. 我很抱歉打破了玻璃杯，这完全是无意的。
        　　2. 用于It is no accident that…，其意为“……绝非偶然”。如：
        　　It is no accident that men fill most of the top jobs. 大多数高级职位由男性担任绝非偶然。
        　　3. 用于习语by accident，其意为“偶然地”“无意地”，主要用作状语，有时也用作表语。如：
        　　I deleted the file by accident. 我无意中把文章删掉了。
        　　If he knew this, it would have had to be by accident.
假如他已知道此事，那一定是出于偶然的。
        　　汉语常将“无意地”与“故意地”用在一起，后者的英语表达是by design或on purpose(注意各自所搭配的介词)。如：
        　　I’m sure he ignored you by accident and not by design. 我想他没理你是无意不是有意的。
        　　I don’t know if it was done by accident or on purpose. 我不知道那是偶然的还是故意的。
