今天的【杏子美剧小课堂】要给大家讲解的是《Drop Dead Diva（美女上错身）》。这是一部有点超现实主义的美剧，大概剧情是：一个美丽但无脑的模特Deb因为一次意外车祸死亡，灵魂阴差阳错进入了一个聪明却肥胖的律师Jan的肉体里，由此开始了她充满各种surprises的新生活。
英文剧名Drop Dead Diva其实挺有内涵。Drop Dead除了本“猝死”的意思，还有“令人绝倒”的意思，所以一语双关。而Diva一般是指著名女歌唱家，尤指歌剧女主角。扮演Jane的演员Brooke Elliott本身就是歌剧科班出身，还在百老汇唱歌剧，所以她在Drop Dead Diva一亮嗓，尽显专业风采。该剧的海报宣传语”Life looks different the second time around “——开宗明义，一语道出Deb的重生将给她带来与之前完全不同的生活。
我们今天就来学习一下Season 1 Episode 1 中的一个小片段：Deb 刚刚从她的新身体中苏醒过来，难以接受现实；她的守护天使（guardian angel）Fred 对她进行思想开导。

【F: Fred D: Deb】
F: Wake up!
D: I just had the strangest dream.
F: It wasn't a dream...Sweetie.
D: Fred? Why do I feel bloated?My... God. You sent me to hell?
F: Relax. Your soul entered a recently vacatedvessel. Your old bod...
D: No, no, no. I'm going back to sleep, andwhen I wake up...
F: Her name... now your name... is Jane.
D: This doesn't work for me.I've never been more than a size 2, and that's only 'cause of the freshman 15,which is why I quit community college. So, who do I have to talk to?
F: Look on the bright side...You're alive. And not only do you getJane's body, but you get her brains, too. Her I.Q. is off the charts.
Deb难以接受自己肥胖臃肿的新身体，她说：“Why do I feel bloated?”我为什么觉得自己肿起来了？
bloat V: toswell or cause to swell, as with a liquid, air, or wind (使)膨胀
举个栗子：
如果我吃了很多豆子，我的胃会觉得胀气。
If I eat too much beans, my stomachbloats up.
所以“一个胀气的胃”也可以说：
a bloated stomach
对于一个模特来说，从苗条的身材变成Jane这个样子无异于是进入了地狱，所以Deb惊恐地问Fred: “You sent me to hell?” 真是令人捧腹。Fred 安慰她放松， 告诉她不过是灵魂进入了一个最佳刚刚空出来的躯体。

所以在外住旅馆，一般12点之前要退房，就可以这么说：
Hotel guests are requested to vacate theirrooms by twelve noon.
当然，如果某人辞职，除了我们之前学过的quit one’s job，也可以说：
Denis vacates his post/job atthe end of the week.
Deb对于Fred的安慰完全没有办法接受，她喊道：
This doesn't work for me. 这招对我不奏效。
与之相反的表达自然是: It works!

chart有图表的意思
off the charts 就是：非常出色；打破记录
She’s the fastest swimmer on the team. Hertime is off the charts
最后大家再来一起思考一下这样两个问题：如果有来世，你想成为谁？你想改变自己的哪些方面？
