He made the best of his situation. 他充分发挥自己的力量
1.Make the best of / Make the most of：充分利用；善用时机；做最有效的利用
例如：The sailors make the best of everything under attack of the storm.（船员们在暴风雨的侵袭下逆境求生。）
常见词组：
Make the best of a bad job（在困境中尽力而为；尽力把损失减少到最小）
Make the best of the time（充分利用这段时间）
2.Situation：形势；局面；职位；处境；状况（指明确具体的环境情况或处境）
例如：This situation is unfavorable for us.（这样的局面对我们来说是不利的。）
常用词组：
No-win situation：决无胜利（或成功）可能的局面
例如：He was trapped in a no-win situation.（他陷入必败的处境。）

1.Catch one's breath：令我屏息
例如：The beautiful valleys made me catch my breath.（那美丽的山谷令我屏息。）
2.Catch：捕捉
常见词组：
1）Catch somebody's eye（引起某人注意；惹人注目）
2）Catch at a straw（作最后的绝望挣扎）
本句用到了“so…that…”句型，表示“太……以至于……”的意思。

Can you break away from old habits? 你能戒掉旧习惯吗?
1.Break away (from somebody / something)：改掉；放弃
例如：I was encouraged to break away from old forms and rules.（大家鼓励我破除旧形式和旧框框。）
其他意思的用法：
1）突然离开；突然挣脱：
The criminal broke away from the young policemen.（那名罪犯从年轻警察手里逃脱了。）
2）与……决裂；从……退出
He broke away from all his old friends.（他和老朋友断绝了来往。）
“戒掉”这词除了break away之外，还有如下比较常见的几个说法：
1）give up：He gave up smoking and drinking to cure his disease.（为了治病他戒掉烟酒。）
2）quit：I've quit smoking.（我戒了烟。）
3）cut out：The doctor said smoking was bad for me. He told me to cut it out.（医生说吸烟对我有害。他告诉我戒掉它。）

When the war breaks out, the two countries break off their diplomatic relations. 战争爆发後,两国间断绝了外交关系。
1.Breaks out：战争、打斗等不愉快事件滴开始；突发；爆发
例如：Fighting had broken out between rival groups of fans.（双方球迷发生了打斗。）
2.Break off：停顿；中断；与……断绝关系
例如：My colleague has broken off the habit of smoking.（我的同事已经戒掉了吸烟的习惯。）
3.Diplomatic relations：外交关系
例如：We have established diplomatic relations with the newly independent nations.（我们已与那几个新近独立的国家建立了外交关系。）
4.Diplomatic：外交的
例如：His father had been in the diplomatic service.（他的父亲曾在外交部门供职。）

Catch on：受欢迎；流行起来；变得时髦
例如：Do you think this fashion will catch on?（你想这个式样人们会喜欢吗？）
Catch on还有如下意思与用法：
1）I don' t quite catch on.（我不很理解。）
2）Catch on fire / Catch fire（着火）
3）I can catch him on the hip. （我能抓住他的把柄。）
相关词组：
Catch sb. on the wrong foot：使某人措手不及
例如：He caught me on the wrong foot -- I left all my money at home.（他令我措手不及--我的钱都留在家里。）.
