(China Protests US Tariffs on Paper Imports)
China is demanding the United States reverse its decision to put new
tariffs on Chinese paper exports to the U.S, which Beijing says will harm
Chinese business. Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman Wang Xinpei said Monday
the tariffs are not acceptable.
Washington imposed the duties Friday in response to what it says are unfair
government subsidies granted to Chinese producers. Chinese officials deny the
charges and say the new tariffs show Washington has gone back on its word to
solve trade disputes through dialogue.
The tariffs reverse a more than 20-year-old U.S. policy of not applying
duties to subsidized goods from so-called "non-market" economies such as
China's.
(Foreign Banks Take A Key Step Toward Growing In
China)
Several large foreign banks took a key step toward entering the huge and
growing Chinese banking sector Monday, as they incorporated local subsidiaries.
Citigroup, HSBC, and two other banks are entering the local retail banking
market.
Until recently, most banks could handle only limited local currency
business. Beijing agreed to gradually open its banking industry to foreign
competitors as part of the deal that allowed China into the World Trade
Organization.
The banks have spent years gaining a foothold in the Chinese market. |
