Of all Vermeer's paintings, it was probably this picture that he held in greatest esteem. It was the painting he used to show off his skills to customers. A customer three centuries after he died was none other than Adolf Hitler

An accepted way of attracting customer at the time was to allow possible buyers into the painter's studio.
It's very hard for us to believe but potential patrons would knock on the artist's door, go in and see him at the easel. Almost I think as a kind of way of proving to themselves that this was the generally thing.
The difficulty for the Delft artist without means was that he had to sell paintings to live, but he had to keep back some in his studio to advertise his skills. It's recorded that one summer's day in 1663 a rich French diplomat came knocking on Vermeer's door, hoping to buy. To the artist's shame, he had nothing to show him. He had to lead the French diplomat round to someone who had previously bought a couple of his paintings - a local baker.
