Painters would depict the most mundane and even unsightly tasks - here, a mother de-Iousing her daughter's hair, by the Delft artist Pieter de Hooch.
They would specialise in sort of niche area perhaps even as nichey as still lives with breakfast pieces or landscapes that are always rainy or something like that.
There was a lot of competition and if you weren't quite as good as the other guy who specialised in your subject you might well fall on hard times.
Vermeer's speciality was the quiet domestic interior. He often showed a woman engaged in some absorbing or private activity pouring milk or reading a letter.
