Egypt's come at the bottom of a list of 22 Arab states in which to be a woman. Sexual harassment, high rates of female genital mutilation and a surge in violence in Islamist feeling after the Arab Spring have all contributed to Egypt's poor showing in the poll by Thomson Reuters.
In case you're wondering, Iraq was second worst followed by Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen. The Comoros Islands where women hold 20% of ministerial positions and where wives generally keep land or the home after divorce came out top. Mona Eltahawy is an Egyptian journalist and commentator. She gave me her reaction to the poll.
I've got to admit that I was shocked when I saw the results. I mean I haven't gone through it and seen all the various reasons that we were listed. What's more important to me is to acknowledge that things are really bad in Egypt. And for a long time, I think, many people have been in denial, especially about this very toxic mix of culture and religion that have been left to us through the legacy of the 60 years of military rule. We removed Mubarak from the presidential palace, that's how we started our political revolution? 我必须承认，看到结果的时候我惊呆了。我之前无法接受，也不知道为什么我们是最后一名。（但）更为重要的是，这个结果让我意识到埃及的状况不佳。长时间以来，很多人都在否认问题，特别是在60年的军事统治之后，我们的文化和宗教融合起来产生的问题。我们推翻了穆巴拉克后该进行怎样的政治改革？我坚信如果不在同时改革社会和性歧视，政治改革无法成功。只有这样，我们才能解决争端，革除我们心中的穆巴拉克（指残余的旧思想）。 |
