The Olympic torch is counting down to its first ever spacewalk. The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics torch will be sent to the International Space Station on board a Russian spacecraft that will blast off from Earth on Thursay.
The rocket that’ll carry the Olympic torch has been emblazoned with the emblem of the Sochi Winter Games, and was hauled into position ready for take-off. This is at the Russian-operated Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
The final checks are being made before liftoff. After the torch arrives at the International Space Station it’ll be taken on a short spacewalk Saturday with two cosmonauts.
The torch will stay in space for five days until the returning crew brings it back to Earth next Monday. The Olympic flame will be lit in Sochi’s stadium on February 7th, marking the start of the Winter Games.
