First though, opening in cinemas this weekend is "Philomena", a film directed by Stephen Frears, based on the experience of an Irish woman Philomena Lee, who was forced in the 1950s to give up her baby son for adoption. Pregnant but unmarried, she'd been taken in by the "Magdalene sisters". Decades later, she determined to find that child, and joined forces, with the journalist Martin Sixsmith, who was initially reluctant to take on the investigation. Eventually however, he wrote a book about the search. From that arose a screenplay by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope. Coogan plays Sixsmith and Philomena is Judi Dench, in what emerges as a subtly shifting and developing partnership, with the unlikely companions uncertain of what they would find when the trail leads to America.
