As well as being a food writer I've spent the last six years documenting and helping to shape Britain's street food revolution. As the high street has struggled to offer food that feels relevant and exciting, a new wave of street food has driven into town - traders selling high-end food out of cool vans trucks and trailers at a price that more of us can afford. With Twitter accounts and Facebook pages, these traders are accessible and answerable to their public. But now comes the difficult part - what to do with them, where do they go? From London to Leeds, Bristol to Edinburgh, no one's quite figured out how and where this food fits in. And for the most part, food remains hidden in the city, safely behind the glass fronts of the high street. But if you're prepared to travel, you can taste the possibilities.
We're at a disused Shell petrol station of the Walworth Road and there is no property around us that's less than five or six storeys tall, three or four large looming tower blocks and this garage forecourt has been reclaimed that the pavement area has been turned into a bar and every corner of the concrete has got a trader on it, six, seven, eight, nine, ten different traders, some in vans, one on a motorbike, one in a little tuk-tuk, but everything fairy lit and wonderfully atmospheric. And if this night market wasn't here, it would be dark and it would be wet and it would be very threatening, whereas now it feels vibrant, it feels alive, it feels a happy place to be. It's all about reclaiming public space.
