But first, when Ravi Shankar died last December after a seven-decade career as a classical composer and performer, most news reports were keen to remind us that he was the man who taught George Harrison to play the sitar. But Shankar's death meant that the mantle of most famous living sitar player fell to another of his students, his daughter Anoushka. She began learning the instruments as a young girl, and later performed regularly with her father. Anoushka Shankar has followed his classical lessons in the traditional ragas but has also taken the instrument into new musical territories. For her latest album, she's teamed up with producer Nitin Sawhney and on three tracks, with her half-sister, the singer Norah Jones. The album emerges in the wake of an eventful couple of years for Anoushka, not only the death of her father, but also marriage to the English filmmaker Joe Wright and the birth of her son. And earlier this year, she posted a video in which she revealed that she'd been sexually abused as a child by a family friend over a period of years. The new album is called Traces of You, given that the title track is one of those that features Norah. I asked Anoushka Shankar whether it was written about their father.
My experience of losing, my father was probably the hugest influence on the record. Urm, but Traces Of You is a title. I think it's more in hindsight that everyone assumes it. It's about him, but actually it was already titled that before I know.
